Equip: Leadership Forum
May 14th
The final EQUIP: Leadership Forum for the season is next Tuesday, May 15th from 6:30-8:30pm. The topic for the main session will be “Discipleship: Leading Others in Gospel Growth” and will feature teaching by Small Groups Pastor Spence Shelton. Spence will take us through Summit’s plan for personal discipleship and methodology. Please RSVP at www.summitrdu.com/leadership to let us know you are coming and what cohort you’ll be joining.
If you have been involved in raising up leaders, discipling others, or you’ve taken up the call from April’s Forum (click on the bottom right video clip) to pour yourselves into others, then you’ll want to hear Spence’s talk. Small group leaders, we would love to have you there to hear and interact with vision from your pastor in the first and second sessions of the evening.
The Main Session will be shorter, but action packed with great teaching and some vital summer opportunities to consider. The cohort time will pick up from there to give extra time to the discipleship that happens during the second hour of the Forums. Cohorts include: Church Planting, Preparing for Marriage, Worship and the Arts, and Small Groups.
We won’t have another EQUIP: Leadership Forum this summer, so it’s your last chance, for a while, to hear vision from Summit pastors and connect with other leaders in the church. If you need childcare for the event, please let us know by Sunday night. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
Feeding of the… 200?
May 10th
“Truly, I say to you, as you did to the least of these my brothers, you did to me.”
–Matthew 25:40 (ESV)
Last month, Summit’s Homeless Ministry had a chance to show Christ’s love to the “least of these” in our city, by preparing and serving dinner to over 200 homeless and working poor in downtown Durham.
As part of our church’s wider focus on the five overlooked people groups of our community (homeless/refugees, orphans, prisoners, unwed mothers, high school dropouts), Summit’s team has partnered with the Urban Ministries soup kitchen and homeless shelter of Durham (www.umdurham.org). As part of this service, we were able to step forward and help meet a very real physical need faced by many in our community. But even more importantly, we were able to help meet the deeper spiritual need, for Jesus’s saving grace, by abandoning the traditional “church group serving/people being served” divide and instead joining the homeless for dinner! The evening of fellowship led to many Christ-centered conversations and a building of ongoing relationships as our team continues to minister and serve.
And this next Monday, May 14, we will have another chance to bring the meal (and God’s love) to the homeless. If you would like to join the team in helping out, please email kellandickens@gmail.com.
Family Worship Night
May 7th
Family Worship Night has been a place where our families have laughed together, danced together, learned together, and ultimately worshiped together. On May 18th we are excited to announce that Pastor JD will be coming to share the gospel in a way that will bless your entire family. We cannot encourage you enough to bring your kids on this night to hear the gospel, sing (and dance!) your favorite kids worship songs, and share in the celebration of baptism that will take place at the end of the night. Make sure you stick around afterwards to eat some free cake and congratulate all our kids who will be baptized! FWN. Friday, 5/18. 6:30pm at Brier Creek South.

On January 23, 2011 the North Durham campus relocated to Hillandale Elementary. Since them we have been having our worship gathering in the gym. Ever wonder what it takes to convert an elementary school gym into a Summit Church campus? Wonder no further…
If you would like to be a part of our setup or teardown team please contact me (rdoherty@summitrdu.com)! We’d love for you to be apart of the team!

Hey North Durham Campus!
It has been such a joy to be on mission alongside of you in North Durham for the last year as we have invested in the community, especially through our partnership with Hillandale Elementary. God has given us the awesome chance to “make disciples of all nations,” and as a campus full of families we have been able to influence other families in our North Durham neighborhoods and schools with the message of hope and salvation through Jesus. Praise God for that! This influence again has a chance to grow as we partner with Hillandale for two major events in the life of the school: testing and the Spring Fling. - - I pray that we are each bold and all engaged in the great chance God has given us to be a part of what He is doing, Josh Navey |
Community Service Opportunity
Apr 18th
Hey North Durham Campus!
We have been given a great opportunity to serve Hillandale that you really need to jump on quickly. The school needs proctors for the upcoming testing period and I would LOVE to have Summit people walking all over the school for a few days in May. What better way to get to know the school, teachers, and kids than to hang out with them from 9:15am-12:30pm for a day or two.
There are 2 steps that you need to take: - The most time sensitive thing is to fill out THIS FORM by THIS Friday, April 20th. - The 2nd thing is to set up a time to stop by Hillandale for a 20-minute training with the testing coordinator, Eleanore Clark.
If you are in a small group (and all of you should be! J), then feel free to forward this along. Mrs. Clark has asked us to help her fill the proctor holes, and I think this would be a GREAT way for us to reach out to Hillandale in a very practical and relational way.

All-Campus Kids Week
Apr 16th
Hey North Durham!
All-Campus Kids Week is coming June 18-22 to the Brier Creek Campus in morning and evening sessions. For one week in the life of our church we will focus on the kids of RDU and we want you to invite everyone you can! If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, we will be meeting after the 9am and 11am services on Sunday in the cafeteria. If you already know you want to volunteer you can go here!
We want this year’s Kids Week to be the biggest one yet, so we are bringing the best kids activities, crafts, games, and lessons to be a resource for you to invite all the kids in your neighborhood. We get so excited about Kids Week because it is a GREAT chance for lost kids and families to get introduced to Jesus Christ in a high-energy, week-long environment where we will be sharing the gospel in a very clear way! Can’t wait to see you Sunday in the cafeteria!

EQUIP Leadership Forum: Men’s Night and Ladies’ Night April 17th:
Apr 12th
This coming Tuesday at the EQUIP: Leadership Forum is going to be Ladies Night! It’s also going to be a night for the MEN. In great Titus 2 fashion, we are going to dive deeply into discipleship issues, with separate sessions for men and women. We have 3 powerful speakers for the men and 4 dynamic women to train the ladies.
Register and RSVP for childcare here.
The Men will start in BC North at 6:30 for a challenging time with FCA regional direction, and former NFL quarterback, Johnny Evans. At 7:30, the men will have three choices: counseling pastor Brad Hambrick will talk about Purity; Seminary theologian and Summit Elder Dr. Bruce Ashford will give an overview of all of Scripture; and the Church Planting team is meeting for it’s regularly scheduled discussions on God’s Mission, international planting, and North American church planting.
The Women will start in BC South (6:30) for a lively time of worship and an interview testimony with Amber Lehman. After that, 4 godly women from our congregation will offer the following discipleship topics: Latoya King will teach on intercession, Cas Monaco on women discipling women; Alicia Miller will cover a talk called “Daily Belief for Life in the Trenches;” and Lauren Ashford will give “The Whole Bible for the Whole Woman.”The women can choose two of these, or one from these and one from the Church Planting cohort.
Childcare will be at a premium for this night. We have capped the registration, so be sure to register for it early! If you are able to make alternative plans, please do so. More information and registration for this great evening can be found at www.summitrdu.com/leadership

“If you haven’t registered to serve-you can do that “here”
(Luke 24:1-6
ESV) But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. [2] And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, [3] but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. [4] While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. [5] And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? [6] He is not here, but has risen!
